Increasingly, physicians and scientists are discovering the complex connections
among genes in the body that influence
disease. These discoveries will enable
personalized treatments in an emerging
area of science known as network medicine.
In his SCAI 2015 Mullins Lecture,
“Network Medicine: A Systems Approach
to Cardiovascular Disease Diagnosis
MD, PhD, chairman
of the Department of
Medicine, Physician-in-Chief of Brigham and
Women’s Hospital, and
Hersey Professor of the
Theory and Practice of
Medicine at Harvard
Medical School, will
discuss how advances
in big data are enabling the new field of
network medicine to uncover the complex
pathways that influence disease.
“Diseases are rarely as simple
as we want them to be,” said Dr.
This year, as part of a major theme running through its educational sessions, SCAI 2015 will
feature a brand-new opening session on State-of-the-Art Technologies. The session will include two
presentations, given by Christian Assad-Kottner,
MD, and by Peter J. Fitzgerald, MD, PhD, each
examining how potentially disruptive technology
may impact invasive/interventional cardiology.
“We will hear about very important advances that are being made in the technology
forum, and how we can use these to enhance and improve our practice,” said SCAI
2015 Program Committee Co-chair Roxana Mehran, MD, FSCAI, who will moder-
ate the session along with Program Committee Chair Michael R. Jaff, DO, FSCAI,
and Co-chair Robert J. Applegate, MD, FSCAI.
The opening session will get everyone excited about the future of the field and the
devices that will shape patient care, added Dr. Jaff. “It is also going to set the tone for
the whole SCAI annual meeting,” he said.
